National Geographic Grant Award

I’m really excited to announce that I’ve received a grant from the National Geographic Society as part of the first cohort for their World Freshwater Initiative, which aims to bring together storytellers, scientists and conservationists focusing on issues surrounding the world’s freshwater ecosystems.

Over the next year I will be exploring how the grassroots river protection movement in Bosnia & Herzegovina is bringing communities together across ethnic lines, in order to protect their rivers, forests, and cultural heritage. I’ll be particularly focused on the Neretva, one of Bosnia’s most important rivers, where scientists and activists are racing against time to stop a major hydropower project threatening to siphon off large tracts of the river.

This was actually a project I had wanted to produce years ago when I moved to Bosnia, which was completely derailed by the pandemic, so I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to finally realise this, and to build on my previous work following river conservation efforts in the region.

I would like to thank Sana Ullah and the whole grant team at National Geographic for their support with this. Stay tuned for more updates!
