I’m really excited to announce that I’ve received a grant from the National Geographic Society as part of the first cohort for their World Freshwater Initiative, which aims to bring together storytellers, scientists and conservationists focusing on issues surrounding the world’s freshwater ecosystems. Over the next year I will be exploring how the grassroots river protection movement in Bosnia & Herzegovina is bringing communities together across ethnic lines, in order to protect their rivers, forests, and cultural heritage. I’ll be particularly focused on the...
Some new work out in this weekend’s Telegraph Magazine. Journalist Martin Fletcher and I recently visited Crossmaglen, a border town in Northern Ireland, where ordinary people are trying to move on from a violent past, 25 years after the Good Friday Agreement, and where the IRA still casts a shadow of fear. Many recounted to us that the current peace has come at the cost of justice for the victims of crimes committed on both sides, and that they still live with the painful knowledge of who in their communities is responsible. ‘People are still ruled by fear of the...
Today Albania's Prime Minister, Edi Rama, signed a declaration establishing the Vjosa as Europe's first Wild River National Park, a truly historic moment for the country, and a major win for American outdoor company Patagonia, and activists who have been campaigning for over a decade to protect the river. This was an incredible moment to witness, and capped off over six years of work documenting the Vjosa, and following the work of the scientists, NGOs and locals who have been fighting to stop development of hydropower dams and other harmful development on the river. My...
I'm really excited that my project The Lament of the Mountains has been shortlisted for the Belfast Photo Festival 2023! This project follows the Malësorë highlanders in the far north of Albania, some of Europe's pastoralist shepherds, who migrate with their herds between high alpine pastures in the summer and low valleys in the winter months. This practice, known as transhumance, is a highly sustainable and adaptable form of farming that has been practiced for centuries, but is quickly dying out as depopulation, climate change, and construction of hydropower dams alter...
Today I’m really excited to announce that I’m launching an online print shop! Over the years I’ve gotten many requests to purchase prints, and with next year marking a decade since I began documenting Albania, I thought it was a good time to launch a selection of prints from my time working there. When I first traveled to Albania, a lot of people thought I was crazy, they said things like “Oh you’re going to get kidnapped!” or “it’s run by the mafia, they’ll kill you!” But it was the words of one friend that particularly sat with...
I’m honoured that one of my portraits has been shortlisted for the Royal Photographic Society's 164th International Photography Exhibition. I took this portrait of Gazmend Bikaj, a nomadic shepherd in Albania’s Kelmend region, while working on a project about the Malësorë highlanders in 2019. Inhabiting some of the most remote areas of Albania’s northern mountains, the Malësorë have survived and maintained many aspects of their culture through centuries of upheaval. Today they are some of the last people carrying on traditional pastoralism in...
Images from a press trip to cover the Vjosa river and ceremony to mark the signing of an agreement between the Albanian government and American outdoor brand Patagonia for the creation of a protected Vjosa National Park, published in Politico. https://www.politico.eu/article/albania-aim-keep-river-vosja-run-wild/
I'm honoured that two of my photos have been selected as winners of the British Journal of Photography's Decade of Change award, which highlights a diverse range of work focused on the climate crisis. Personally, these happen to be two of my favourite images that I've taken, selected from two different longterm bodies of work that focus on the plight of the Vjosa river, one of Europe's last free flowing rivers, as well as the nomadic shepherds of Albania's northern Kelmend valley, who are facing direct existential threats from both a rapidly changing climate, and...
I had a great chat with the hosts of the Track Two podcast, whose second season is exploring how journalists contribute to a thriving, healthy civil society. We discussed my work covering stories about cultural heritage in the Western Balkans, working in underreported areas, and how the past and present influence the relationship between people and the places they call home. So grateful to have the chance to discuss my work in depth, and the impact I am trying to have as a visual storyteller. Have a listen here:...
Was pleased to have the chance to shoot these photos of Dubrovnik in the off season for British Airways High Life magazine. I've had commissions in Dubrovnik before, but always in the busy summer season, so it was a real treat to be able to experience the city during a calmer time. Dubrovnik can often feel like Disneyland, with crowds of people, cruise ships, and most things tailored towards tourism. Wandering the quiet, cool streets in winter, I experienced a completely different atmosphere, with locals indeed "taking back" their old town, carrying on life as they have for...
